The main rule in choosing a pearl necklace is to be bold and unconventional.
For a long time, pearl necklaces were seen as a classic piece of jewelry. It was worn for special occasions and combined with strictly tailored clothes. However, the culture of wearing jewellery is changing and bringing in new trends. The new rule for choosing and wearing pearls is to be bold and unconventional when combining them with your look. Whichever style you prefer, a pearl necklace will not lose its charm and elegance. That is the strong point of the amazing pearls.

What are a pearl necklace, a choker and a collar?

Necklaces, chokers and collars refer to neck jewelry. They attract attention to graceful collarbones, shoulders and the delicate lines of the chin. However, each has its own characteristics and accents that can be advantageously used to compose an attractive look.
A collar is a medium length piece and rarely drops below the bust. The central part is always larger and more expressive than the side parts.
A choker is a tiny piece of jewelry hugging the neck. Some pearl chokers are complemented with small pendants but do not go below the collarbones.
A necklace is an accessory with a symmetrical design along its entire length. Both the central and side parts are characterized by the same design. Necklaces are often worn over clothes. Designers choose different kinds of pearls for inlay. There are over 150 shades of pearls in different shapes and sizes. All this variety makes it possible to create exclusive and exquisite pearl necklaces for women and men.

Natural and cultivated pearls – what is the difference?

Pearls are formed in the shell of a mollusk. When a grain of sand or other irritant enters it, the mollusk begins to produce layers of nacre around it. This is how natural or wild pearls are formed. They are most commonly found in designer and vintage collections.
Cultured pearls are the same natural material. But they are produced under specially designed conditions. For this purpose, a substance is placed in the mollusk’s shell to initiate the nacre layering process.
Pearls are cultured in sea and freshwater. There are several particularly valuable varieties of sea pearls, including Tahitian pearls, Akoya pearls and South Sea pearls.
Tahitian pearls are unique in their coloring, attracting attention with their atypical shades of blue, green, and grey with shimmering colours. Their size of 8 to 16 mm enables creation of large necklaces to be worn as mono-jewelry without other accessories.
Akoya, first bred through cultivation 100 years ago. It takes its name from the Akoya oyster from which it is extracted. Pearls are valuable and expensive because once they are extracted from the shell, the delicate Akoya oysters die. It takes a long time and it is not easy to get the material for the jewelry.
Southern pearls are distinguished by their large diameter, which varies from 9 to 20 mm, as they are taken from the largest oyster, Pinctada Maxima. The range of colors varies from cool bluish to warm golden. Pearls come in many different shapes: drop-shaped, flattened, baroque, and with grooves along the edges. Thanks to the variety of shades and shapes, it’s easy to choose the right pearl necklace for a wedding to match the color of the dress or for a business or evening look.
In addition to wild and cultured pearls, there are also synthetic pearls. These are an imitation of a natural material that is used in the production of fashion jewelry. The materials used include plastic, porcelain, alabaster, pressed nacre, and even congealed gelatine.

Pearls without nacre – the rarest and most unusual

Classic pearls are common and often found in jewelry collections. But those who prefer to wear exclusive necklaces made of real pearls should consider products with pearls without nacre. There are several kinds of pearls that are formed without nacre and resemble small coloured stones: Cong, Melo Melo and Quahog.
Cong – pearls of this species are formed in Queen Conch shells in the wild. They inhabit the depths of the Caribbean Sea and are very rare. They are not cultured, as the mollusk dies after being opened. In the process of making a pearl, it does not secrete nacre, and the finished material looks like a pink pebble.
Melo Melo – there is also no nacre in the structure of a pearl, as it is produced not by a mollusk, but by the sea snail Melo Melo. It lives in the clay area of tropical waters and is extremely rare. Accessories made from Melo Melo pearls are distinguished by their warm honey and chocolate brown hues.
Quahog is another type of rare pearl, which is found in one case per 100,000. Various shades are found in the palette, but the most valuable are lilac and purple. In the finished jewelry, they shimmer in halftones, creating an interesting play of light. Jewelry with Quahog pearls can be found only in antique collections.

Catwalk trends – which pearl necklaces are recommended to wear by Chanel, Dior and Tiffany?

Looking at the legendary and iconic jewellery brands of the world, it’s easy to spot the trends in fashion creation. At their head is originality and freedom of choice.
For example, the PLUME DE CHANEL piece is encountered with the legendary feather of Mademoiselle Chanel, which she used in her first jewellery collection, and round pearls. A necklace with a single pearl is a versatile solution under a strict masculine jacket, a delicate silk dress or a cosy sweatshirt.
A DIOR ACADEMY necklace and tie are no less striking in a ladies’ look. A pearl necklace with a pendant can be worn separately from the classic black tie. But how daring and attractive this combination looks in combination with a monochrome shirt and with culottes. Such a pearl necklace is also pertinent in an evening look under a jacket dress with a deep cleavage.
Always relevant in a woman’s look is a pearl necklace in several layers. Such a model is offered by Tiffany in its Ziegfeld collection. It can be worn as a necklace or a short neck piece, wrapped several times. And to make the accessory more personalized, in one of its layers a custom-made name or initial pendant can be placed. A pearl necklace with an initial is a topical choice for men and women.
For men, there are also many other interesting pearl jewelry pieces. Among the accessories are a combined pearl necklace with a chain, pearl strands, as well as a necklace with large, brightly coloured pendants. Pearl necklaces on men are one of the latest trends, showcased by Anwar Hadid, Harry Styles, A$AP Rocky, and of course models by Japanese jewelry brand Mikimoto.
